Authority Investigates Technical Service Disruptions

Botswana players flooded social media with complaints about Betway operations, reporting difficulties with betting and withdrawals. Screenshots showed the platform displaying “We’ll be right back” messages indicating maintenance or technical problems. The Gambling Authority issued a statement on October 1, 2025, acknowledging player concerns and confirming active engagement with involved parties.

“To strengthen this process, the Authority has engaged independent external experts to assist in identifying the root causes of the challenges and to recommend corrective measures. This step reflects our commitment to accountability, integrity and upholding the highest regulatory standards. We assure all stakeholders, including licensees, partners, and most importantly, players, that their interests remain protected. Safeguarding the wellbeing of players and ensuring responsible gambling practices remain at the core of our mandate. The Gambling Authority remains committed to building a safe, fair, transparent and sustainable gambling industry for the benefit of all citizens of Botswana,” the authority stated.

Players Question Regulatory Response Approach

Critics note the authority’s statement avoided naming specific operators, despite Betway being central to the controversy. Some players interpret this omission as regulatory hesitance to confront international betting companies. Technical issues have recurred since Botswana’s regulated betting market launched in March 2025, including April blackouts that prevented user access to multiple platforms.

Continued technical problems and perceived regulatory inadequacy risk eroding bettor confidence in licensed platforms. This could drive users toward offshore betting sites, potentially reducing tax revenue and complicating problem gambling oversight within the jurisdiction.
