The Gambling Authority of Botswana has released an updated registry of licensed betting establishments authorized to operate within its jurisdiction. Meanwhile, six operators currently maintain physical locations and online platforms across the country.

Licensing Framework Creates 400 Industry Jobs

The authority issued ten national bookmaker licenses in May 2025 to formalize industry segments. Therefore, the licensing process generated more than 400 employment positions in casinos and betting establishments. Moreover, six licensees remain operational while three prepare for market launch. Consequently, one licensee has withdrawn from the regulatory framework.

The regulator published the operator list to inform bettors about approved betting options. Meanwhile, growing demand exists from customers for the authority to license additional international operators. However, some bettors have raised concerns about current licensee performance. Therefore, the authority faces pressure to expand the approved operator roster.

Regulatory Focus Prioritizes Consumer Protection

The Gambling Authority emphasizes its commitment to developing a regulated betting sector. Subsequently, the framework prioritizes protection for both consumers and licensed operators. Moreover, the regulatory structure aims to maintain industry standards while addressing stakeholder concerns. Therefore, the authority balances market expansion demands with oversight requirements.

The approved operators hold licenses under the 2012 Gambling Act governing all gambling activities in Botswana. Meanwhile, the regulatory framework establishes operational standards for physical and online betting platforms. Consequently, the authority continues monitoring licensee compliance while evaluating future licensing applications from international betting companies.
