A Gambling Authority and University of Botswana study found illegal betting reached $32.2 million, totaling twice the size of Botswana’s legitimate betting market. Acting CEO Moruntshi Kemorwale presented findings at the Botswana Economic Forum highlighting rapid gambling industry expansion. The research demonstrates the unregulated gambling market is twice the value of the regulated sector.

Online Licensing Drives Activity Growth

The Gambling Authority licensed online sports betting operators earlier this year. The country witnessed notable rise in gambling activities, especially among younger demographics. Super Group’s latest revenue figures showed $646 million in African total earnings between January and September, largely fueled by Botswana’s strong performance.

Many bettors including growing numbers of minors are drawn to offshore platforms operating outside regulatory frameworks. In March, the Gambling Authority estimated approximately 550,000 active bettors in Botswana. Only about 220,000 individuals, or 40% of bettors use licensed operators.

Regulatory Oversight Targets Revenue and Safety

The figures demonstrate continued dominance of unregulated betting platforms across Botswana’s gambling market. Kemorwale suggested bringing illegal betting platforms under regulatory oversight could increase government revenue. The approach would ensure a safer betting environment for citizens.

Regulatory integration contributes to the industry’s long-term sustainability, according to authority assessments. Despite the popularity of regulated wagering options, offshore platforms attract significant bettor participation. The study highlights enforcement challenges facing Botswana’s gambling regulatory framework addressing unlicensed operator activity.
