The Gambling Authority of Botswana and the Lesotho Casino Board have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in gambling regulation. The agreement aims to support transparent licensing, joint anti-money laundering efforts, and responsible gambling practices.

Strengthening Cross-Border Regulatory Collaboration

The formal agreement was signed by Mr. Marvin T. Torto, Chairman of the Gambling Authority Board in Botswana, and Mr. Pokello Mahlomola, Chairman of the Lesotho Casino Board. Both regulators emphasized the MoU as a significant milestone in improving regulatory oversight and building institutional capacity across borders.

According to Mr. Torto,

“This partnership is a reflection of our shared values – good governance, fairness, and innovation. We are excited to walk this journey with our Lesotho counterparts and build a stronger, more resilient regulatory environment.”

Focus Areas of the Agreement

The MoU outlines several areas for active collaboration:

  • Licensing and Compliance: Authorities will share knowledge on licensing frameworks, operational standards, and enforcement mechanisms.

  • Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Responsible Gambling: The regulators plan to coordinate efforts to detect illicit activity and promote safer gambling environments.

  • Training and Technical Support: Capacity-building initiatives will include staff training, technical support, and staff exchanges to improve institutional expertise.
