The Esports Kenya Federation has partnered with Mount Kenya University (MKU) to establish the first esports training center in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa. Located at MKU’s main campus in Thika Town, this initiative represents a significant step forward for the esports industry in the region.

Comprehensive support for esports development

Under this partnership, MKU will provide the necessary space, operational support, and integrate esports into its academic curriculum. The Esports Kenya Federation will supply the equipment, technical support, and training resources. This collaboration aims to create a robust infrastructure to support the growing esports community in Kenya.

The 154m² facility is designed to equip students and local youth with the skills needed to become professional esports players, coaches, and referees.  Additionally, the center will offer training in transferable skills related to esports, such as streaming, content creation, and game development, broadening career opportunities for participants.

Statements from key leaders

During MKU’s 25th graduation ceremony, Chairman Prof. Gicharu highlighted the initiative’s benefits: “To our GenZ who are active in esports, I am delighted to announce that MKU in collaboration with Esports Kenya Federation will establish an esports training center. It will equip our students with skills that will enable them to generate an income and even make a career via their hobby.”

Esports Kenya President Ronny Lusigi also emphasized the importance of the collaboration: “We appreciate MKU for this kind gesture. It gives us an opportunity to grow esports in Kenya. Having an esteemed university on board is also a huge boost to our efforts of growing the awareness of esports as educational institutions command huge respect in the community. A special thanks to the university for also allowing the facility to be accessed by the general public.”
