Kenya Shuts Down Over 50 Unlicensed Betting Sites
Kenya’s Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has ordered the immediate suspension of more than 50 betting platforms for operating without licenses. The move includes cutting off mobile payment services and follows mounting public concerns over fraudulent practices.

Unlicensed Operators Targeted by Authorities
The Betting Control and Licensing Board has taken decisive action against over 50 betting firms that were operating without its authorization. In a letter addressed to the CEO of the Communications Authority of Kenya, BCLB directed Safaricom to suspend both paybill and STK push services linked to the affected platforms. Companies such as Cheza Crash, Skai Crash, Vuma Bet, and Aviator 254 are among those listed.
In its official statement, the Board cited public backlash as a major factor behind the enforcement effort. “Unauthorized betting websites have sparked public outrage by operating without approval from the Board. The Board has taken note of complaints from concerned citizens regarding these platforms, which exploit users by demanding money through betting schemes,” BCLB stated.
Violations of Gaming Regulations Prompt Shutdown
BCLB emphasized that the platforms in question had breached established gaming regulations, justifying the immediate action. “Additionally, the platforms violate the gaming regulations set by the Board, necessitating their immediate shutdown,” the regulator explained.
This enforcement follows a wider regulatory push. Earlier in April, the government banned all gambling-related advertising across media platforms for 30 days. The move was prompted by concerns over rising gambling addiction rates in the country.
The directive sent to Safaricom concluded with clear instructions: “The Board has determined that necessary measures must be taken against the listed websites, including their immediate shutdown. Additionally, by copy of this letter, Safaricom PLC Limited is hereby instructed to suspend all associated Pay Bill numbers with immediate effect,” BCLB said.
