Niger’s Ministry of National Education has initiated an ambitious connectivity project to provide high-speed internet access to 298 schools within five months, representing a significant digital infrastructure investment in the country’s education sector.

Government Prioritizes Digital Education Access

Minister Dr. Élisabeth Sherif officially launched the High-Speed Internet Connectivity – Education Project on September 18, 2025, at Abache Chaibou High School in Niamey. The initiative forms part of the 2025 Work Program under the Intelligent Village initiative’s second component, focused on strengthening national digital connectivity.

Dr. Sherif emphasized education’s foundational role and digital access as essential tools for learning and professional preparation. The project reflects President Abdourahamane Tiani and Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine’s commitment to digital transformation in education.

Connected Classrooms Expand Learning Resources

The minister described connected classrooms as “open doors to the world” while assuring teachers that connectivity supports rather than replaces their educational role. Students and educators in nearly 300 schools will gain access to extensive educational materials, interactive programs, and digital learning tools upon project completion.

The launch ceremony brought together representatives from the National Information Society Agency, Niamey Region’s government, the High Personal Data Protection Authority, World Bank officials, major telecommunications operators, and education stakeholders. This collaboration indicates broad institutional support for Niger’s educational digitization efforts across multiple sectors.
