Nigeria Discusses UN University Digital Research Institute at ICEGOV Summit
Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy met with United Nations University Rector Professor Tshilidzi Marwala at ICEGOV 2025. Meanwhile, discussions centered on advancing digital transformation through research partnerships. Additionally, both parties agreed to work toward establishing a UNU Institute in Nigeria focused on Digital Public Infrastructure. Furthermore, the meeting explored possibilities for two additional UNU research hubs in the country.

Multiple Research Facilities Target Technology Development
One proposed hub would focus on Artificial Intelligence in collaboration with the UNU Institute on AI in Bologna. Therefore, the second facility would concentrate on Digital Skills and Literacy development. Moreover, the collaboration strengthens partnership areas including Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence capacity building. Consequently, Nigeria positions itself as a regional hub for advanced technology research and development initiatives.
The discussions occurred on the sidelines of ICEGOV 2025 conference. Meanwhile, the minister expressed hope that at least one initiative would launch before the end of his tenure. Additionally, Nigeria reaffirms commitment to advancing research-driven innovation and digital capacity building. Therefore, the proposed institutes would support the country’s broader digital transformation objectives.
Digital Infrastructure Focus Drives Partnership Strategy
The primary institute would concentrate on Digital Public Infrastructure development and implementation. Meanwhile, this focus aligns with Nigeria’s national priorities for technology-enabled governance and services. Moreover, the research facilities would provide platforms for skills development and technology innovation. Therefore, the partnership represents strategic alignment between Nigerian government priorities and UN University research capabilities.
The proposed collaboration targets multiple technology sectors requiring advanced research and development support. Additionally, partnerships with existing UN University institutes provide access to global expertise networks. Consequently, Nigeria gains opportunities to accelerate digital transformation through evidence-based research and capacity building programs. Therefore, the initiatives support long-term objectives for innovation-driven economic development.
