The Nigeria Premier Football League faces its most serious integrity crisis as officials prepare to question additional players following revelations from a suspended goalkeeper. WhatsApp communications now in league possession have identified several former Plateau United players who may have participated in illegal betting activities, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation.

Goalkeeper’s Cooperation Opens Wider Investigation

Adewale Adeyinka’s appearance before the NPFL investigative panel in Abuja proved to be a turning point in the probe. The former Plateau United goalkeeper provided information that implicated other individuals after his legal team negotiated the terms of his testimony. His cooperation resulted in the immediate lifting of his suspension, allowing him to sign with any club.

The investigation began when Adeyinka refused to sign a contract with Shooting Stars Sports Club containing anti-betting clauses. Davidson Owumi, NPFL Chief Operating Officer, confirmed that the information received from the goalkeeper’s testimony necessitated further inquiry into the matter. All individuals mentioned in connection with the case will be summoned as the investigation continues.

Previous Scandals Highlight Systemic Problems

The current probe follows disturbing allegations that emerged last season involving Lobi Stars. Media officer Emmanuel Ujah accused players and officials of compromising matches during a radio interview with Today 95.1 FM in Port Harcourt. He claimed players would inform associates about betting opportunities, saying they would ask people to bet on specific outcomes like conceding two goals.

The fallout from those allegations proved devastating for the club. Ujah received a ban from the NPFL following the investigation. Lobi Stars subsequently suffered relegation after finishing at the bottom of the league table with 28 points from 38 games, having failed to win a match since December 14, 2024.
