Puntland Bans 1xBet Amid Growing Social and Economic Concerns
Somalia’s Puntland State has banned the operations of the 1xBet online betting app, citing its adverse social and economic impacts, including capital flight and family disruptions. The decision, made through an executive decree by President Said Abdullahi Deni, has sparked debate over governance and regulatory authority.
Executive Decree Targets Online Gambling
President Deni’s decree officially prohibits the use of 1xBet within Puntland, directing telecommunications companies, including Golis, Somtel, and Amtel, to stop creating new accounts tied to the app and to close any existing ones. However, as of now, these companies have not demonstrated compliance with the directive.
The move responds to concerns raised earlier by Abdiqani Farah Dhaashane, a Puntland Member of Parliament, who called for stricter measures against unregulated online betting platforms. Dhaashane emphasized the app’s detrimental effects, particularly on younger users, and questioned the role of telecommunications companies in enabling these services.
The widespread use of 1xBet in Puntland has been linked to significant social and economic challenges. Critics argue that the platform facilitates capital flight, draining local resources, and exacerbates family breakdowns due to gambling-related disputes. These issues prompted lawmakers to take action, framing the ban as a necessary step to address these growing concerns.
Debate Over Regulatory Authority
The decree has ignited controversy within Puntland’s political landscape. While some lawmakers commend the presidency’s decisive action, others argue that the Telecommunications Ministry should have spearheaded the effort. Critics suggest that the presidency’s involvement may undermine the proper balance of power within the state government.
This debate underscores a broader issue: the lack of a clear regulatory framework for addressing online gambling in Puntland. Without established guidelines, questions remain about the appropriate governmental authority to implement and enforce such measures.
