South Africa’s gross gambling revenue (GGR) reached a record high of ZAR59.3bn in 2023-24, up 25.7% from ZAR47.12bn in the previous year. Sports betting was the main driver of this growth.

Sports Betting Tops the Charts
Sports betting was the biggest contributor to the GGR, at ZAR35.91bn, 60.5% of the total. That’s 51.2% up from last year.
Online betting was the main driver of sports betting revenue, ZAR28.97bn, 49% of the total GGR for the year. But online sports betting is only legal in a few provinces, the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West.
Retail betting also contributed significantly, ZAR6.94bn. That’s 19% of betting revenue and 11.7% of total market revenue.
Other Sectors Don’t Grow
While sports betting grew big time, other gambling sectors didn’t grow as much. Online casinos generated ZAR17.36bn, flat with a 0.1% year-on-year growth. Limited payout machines (LPMs) which have restricted bets and prizes, generated ZAR4.15bn, 1.9% down from last year. Bingo grew 2.4% to ZAR1.89bn.
Record Player Spend in 2023-24
South Africans spent a record ZAR1.14tn in 2023-24. That’s 40.2% up from the previous record of ZAR815.11bn. Sports betting was the biggest chunk of that spend, with players betting ZAR761.26bn, 66.6% of total spend.
Casino gambling was the second biggest segment for player spend, ZAR297.42bn, 26% of all bets. LPMs were ZAR53.74bn, 4.7% of total bets and bingo was ZAR30.27bn, 2.6% of all bets.
Provincial Performance
The Western Cape was the biggest in terms of total revenue, ZAR18.79bn from ZAR353.19bn in player bets. It’s one of the few provinces that allows legal online sports betting which helped boost its numbers.
Gauteng, the most populous province, was second with ZAR13.10bn from ZAR173.7bn in bets. Mpumalanga had the highest player wagers at ZAR359.34bn but third in revenue, ZAR12.98bn.
Tax Contributions
In the 2023-24 period, South Africa’s gambling industry paid ZAR4.84bn in taxes. 50% of that came from sports betting, ZAR2.41bn, with ZAR889m from online betting alone.
