Tanzania Banking Drive Accelerates Online Gambling Sector Growth
ABSA Bank Tanzania’s digital banking expansion is reshaping the country’s online gambling landscape as the sector records unprecedented growth. The bank’s initiative to promote cashless transactions has coincided with the industry generating €90.8 million in revenue over the past four years, nearly doubling previous figures.

Digital Payment Infrastructure Takes Hold
The bank launched its card and digital banking promotion on September 30, targeting increased adoption of electronic payment methods. The initiative encompasses debit and credit cards, internet banking, mobile banking, and agency services. According to Ndabu Swere, Director of Retail Banking, the campaign aims to accelerate Tanzania’s transition to a cashless economy. The program offers €42,000 in prizes through weekly, monthly, and grand draws to encourage digital payment adoption.
The Gaming Board of Tanzania reports that 62 licensed operators have invested €23.3 million over two years. These operators now offer 8,549 betting games across their platforms. Mobile money adoption has emerged as a key driver, alongside stricter licensing requirements and growing consumer interest in digital casinos and sports betting.
Industry Expansion Meets Regulatory Framework
The online gambling sector’s revenue growth from €46.1 million to €90.8 million reflects broader technological adoption across Tanzania. Aron Luhanga, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at ABSA, noted that digital transactions enhance transparency and reduce cash-handling costs. The national lottery operator has introduced online draws to improve transparency in gaming operations.
Digital banking infrastructure provides operators with more reliable payment systems and faster transaction processing. For regulators, electronic payments create clearer audit trails and support compliance monitoring. The convergence of improved banking services and regulatory oversight is establishing a framework for sustainable industry development.
