The Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board has approved Tsogo Sun’s licence relocation from Caledon to Somerset West, ending a decade-long regulatory process and introducing direct competition to Sun International’s GrandWest Casino in Cape Town metro.

Regulatory Approval Ends Protracted Licensing Process

The board’s decision allows Tsogo Sun to proceed with casino and hospitality development in the Helderberg area. The JSE-listed casino group has repeatedly criticized the board’s handling of the licence transfer, arguing that the Somerset West and Strand project faced unnecessary obstacles. Tsogo Sun contends that the Helderberg and Overberg regions have lacked access to quality casino and hotel infrastructure.

The company emphasizes economic benefits including job creation and tourism development potential from the new facility. The approval represents the most significant development in Cape Town’s casino market in two decades, challenging Sun International’s established position in the region.

GrandWest Faces New Market Competition

Sun International’s GrandWest currently operates as Cape Town metro’s only fully-developed casino establishment. The company describes the regulatory approval as a positive development enabling world-class infrastructure delivery to an underserved region.

The Somerset West development marks a strategic expansion for Tsogo Sun in the Western Cape gaming sector. The project aims to address what the company identifies as gaps in regional casino and hotel service availability while establishing competitive operations in Cape Town’s gaming market.
