Uganda Seizes 30 Illegal Gaming Machines in Lira City Crackdown
Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board has urged bettors to verify operator licenses before placing wagers following a major crackdown in Lira City on October 21. Meanwhile, over 30 unlicensed gaming machines were confiscated from bars and hidden gambling establishments.
License Verification Requirements Emphasized
The regulatory board stressed that all licensed operators must display licenses visibly with NLGRB logos and scannable verification codes. Therefore, bettors should confirm operator legitimacy before engaging in gambling activities. Moreover, locations including Corner Kamdini and Teso Bar were targeted during enforcement operations. Consequently, investigations continue to identify parties responsible for operating illegal gaming establishments.
Operators running unauthorized setups face penalties under Section 67 of the Lotteries and Gaming Act, Cap 334. Meanwhile, the board emphasizes protection of bettors through verification of proper licensing for operators and equipment suppliers. Additionally, license displays near counters enable customers to confirm operator legitimacy. Therefore, regulatory compliance ensures fair gaming practices and consumer protection.
Residents Report Rigged Machine Operations
Local bettors claim some operators deliberately run rigged machines, favoring establishments over players. Therefore, residents describe illegal equipment as unfair to customers who lose money consistently. Moreover, one bettor reported losing approximately $5.80 on average per session on slot machines. Consequently, residents express frustration over losing funds needed for essential expenses.
Since September 2025, more than 6,000 illegal gaming machines have been confiscated nationwide, with over 3,000 destroyed. Meanwhile, the regulatory board continues encouraging public reporting of suspicious gaming activities. Additionally, the authority promotes responsible gambling practices to safeguard Ugandan financial wellbeing.
