Western Union partnered with Zoona Transactions Zambia Limited and Chipper Cash to launch international money transfer services within the Chipper Cash mobile application. The collaboration enables Zambian customers to send and receive funds across Western Union’s network of over 200 countries and territories through mobile wallets and cash pickup locations worldwide.

Digital Payment Evolution Targets Mobile-First Population

Zambia’s population of over 20 million increasingly adopts mobile-first financial solutions, driving demand for integrated digital services. Mohamed Touhami el Ouazzani, Western Union’s Regional Vice President of Africa, stated that “Zambia’s digitally savvy population of over 20 million is driving a remarkable shift toward mobile-first financial solutions” and “integrating our international money transfer services in the Chipper Cash app means customers can transfer funds across our global network – reliably and with ease.”

The partnership combines Western Union’s 175 years of international money movement expertise with Chipper Cash and Zoona’s local payments knowledge and mobile technology platforms. Customers can fund transactions using their Chipper Cash wallet, which accepts top-ups through multiple channels including retailers, mobile operators, banks, and ATMs. Bank account payouts will launch following the initial mobile wallet and cash pickup options.

Fintech Integration Expands Global Financial Access

Chipper Cash acquired Zoona in 2022, creating a combined customer base of 5 million users across Africa. Brett Magrath, CEO at Zoona and CPO at Chipper Cash, explained that “at Zoona, we’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible evolution of Zambia’s financial landscape—from the early days of cash-based transactions and agent networks to a thriving ecosystem of mobile and digital payments.”

The collaboration builds upon Western Union’s established physical presence in Zambia while extending digital service capabilities. Smartphone adoption growth creates opportunities for app-based financial experiences beyond traditional USSD services. The partnership aims to provide financial services access regardless of customers’ banking status, supporting broader financial inclusion objectives across Zambian markets.
