BetPawa has emerged as a prominent player in Africa’s iGaming industry, offering accessible and user-friendly sports betting experiences across multiple countries. In this article we take a little more insight into the activities of this company. We will also pay attention to ownership issues.

Ownership of BetPawa

The BetPawa brand is owned by Mchezo Limited, a Rwanda-based company. Mchezo is part of a group of companies that collaborate to bring the BetPawa brand and technology to customers in Africa.

In 2022, BetPawa initiated a project to distribute $2 million in shares, making 200,000 loyal customers shareholders in Mchezo.

The technology behind BetPawa is developed by pawaTech, based in Tallinn, Estonia. The pawaTech Group is owned by over 70 private investors who first collaborated through the African early-stage technology fund, 88mph.

Historical Development in Africa

BetPawa’s origins can be traced back to the seed-fund 88mph, founded by Danish entrepreneur Kresten Buch.

In 2014, the fund took a minority stake in Uganda-based sports betting company Mbet. After the initial launch of operations in Uganda, the brand quickly expanded to Kenya the following year.

By 2017, BetPawa was available in Nigeria and Zambia, with Ghana and Tanzania opening in 2018. Since then, the brand has expanded its African footprint to 11 markets in total as of 2023.

In 2022, BetPawa began a project giving away $2 million in shares, making 200,000 loyal customers Mchezo shareholders.

The Current Landscape

As of 2025, BetPawa operates in Benin, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The brand is involved in various community-minded projects and programs across Africa through several initiatives, including sport development, sponsorship, and healthcare.

As it expands into new markets, it pledges to continue these efforts and potentially broaden their impact even further, promising to contribute positively to the local community.

Supporting Sports and The Local Community

BetPawa regularly supports sports and local initiatives. Recently, the brand’s employees took part in a corporate run under the slogan “Run for Expectant Mothers”.

It aimed to address maternal and child mortality by raising funds to improve health care for expectant mothers in Uganda.

BetPawa’s men’s and women’s teams, led by local partner Allan Tumushabe, took first place in the five-kilometer race. The goal of the event was to raise UGX 100 million to deliver 1,000 maternity kits to four major health centers in eastern and northern Uganda.

A total of UGX 32.5 million was raised, of which betPawa donated UGX 10 million. The funds will be used to purchase maternity kits, a key step towards improving maternal health care services in the country.

In addition, BetPawa donated essential supplies to Jinja Referral Hospital in Uganda in conjunction with World Mental Health Day in September. This has helped improve the quality of care provided in the mental health unit of this facility.

The company is also involved in sponsoring soccer in Ghana. BetPawa is the official partner of the men’s Premier League and the women’s FA Cup. The aforementioned company is also a sponsor of the Rwandan basketball league.

BetPawa’s growth reflects its commitment to providing tailored betting experiences for African users, emphasizing simplicity, accessibility, and community engagement.
