Police Commissioner Enforces Discipline Measures
Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi announced the directive following public criticism of officers gambling in uniform. The practice violates internal regulations and damages the force’s public image, according to official statements. Nyathi confirmed that disciplinary action awaits any officer caught violating the new restrictions.
The announcement coincided with the National Forum on Responsible Betting in Harare, where regulators and industry representatives discussed managing market growth. Gaming operators have privately maintained similar policies for years, barring uniformed personnel from their premises to avoid customer discomfort.
Industry Defends Economic Contributions
Gambling operators responded by highlighting the sector’s economic benefits to Zimbabwe. Dr Misheck Chingozha from the Lotteries and Gaming Board noted that public perception of gambling as harmful is changing. The industry now represents a significant source of employment and government revenue across the country.
Sports editor Robson Sharuko emphasized the sector’s legitimacy despite ongoing stigma. Thousands of Zimbabweans work in gambling-related positions, while operators contribute substantial tax revenue to national coffers. The forum addressed concerns about illegal operators and stressed the importance of responsible gambling measures as the market continues expanding.
